Expandable, storm – ready housing units that are cheaper and faster to construct have been recommended as ideal structures for areas badly hit by typhoons. This was disclosed by Ar. German Janus Niño Guidaben of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) during the Capitol Reports Friday forum that discussed Housing infrastructure rehabilitation.

He said LGUs need to consider the free design of core shelters that UAP is offering to fast track the building of socialized housing units by the government. At least six million (6M) families are being eyed to be built in six (6) years under the National Government’s Pambansang Pabahay ng Pilipino. Usec. De Guzman has visited Bohol recently to look into the plight of the 14, 000 families belonging to the informal settlers who need shelter.

Most of them have been prohibited by the LGUs not to rebuild their houses in the salvage zones or near shorelines because these are high – risk and no build zones. The tripartite effort to rehabilitate houses damaged by super typhoon Odette is made by the government, the private sector and the LGUs. (ECT)
